Joan Clarice Frey (nee Hammang)

Longtime resident of Mount Prospect

Joan C. Frey, 81, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 2, 2016 with her family by her side.  Joan was the beloved wife of John Frey for 61 years, devoted daughter of Janet Hammang and the late Matthew Hammang.  Loving mother of Michael (Jane) Frey, Lynn (Larry) Pahl, and Tom (Peggy) Frey. Fond Grandmother of Andrea (Mark) Guthrie, Timothy (Monica) Frey, Caleb (Claudia) Pahl, Orion (Rebekah) Pahl, Zachary (Klaire) Frey, Jorie (Scott) Combs, Trevor Frey and Sean Frey. Great-Grandmother of Megan and Andrew Guthrie, Lucia and Daniel Pahl, Jacob Frey and William Frey. Aunt and Great Aunt of many nieces and nephews. Joan was preceded in death by her in-laws, Albert and Elsie Frey, her sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Robert Schmidt, brother-in-law and sister in law, William and Florence Frey.

Joan was born May 11, 1935 in Chicago, IL and married her Steinmetz High School sweetheart John, on June 19, 1955. John was stationed in Germany and Joan traveled by boat and joined him there, where they enjoyed traveling Europe as newlyweds.  They later moved to Mount Prospect and lived there for over 30 years. They were active members of St. Paul Lutheran church. Joan had an enjoyable  career as an activity director at several nursing homes in the area. After that they enjoyed 18 years of retirement living in Lake Carroll, IL where they made many friends.   Joan loved to sing and was a choir member at her church for many years.  She was an avid reader and member of book clubs throughout her life.  In January of 2016 she was diagnosed with cancer, but fought with grace and strength until the end. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Our family would like to especially thank Transitions Hospice and mom’s wonderful caregiver Remy, and all her friends for the generous support they gave her throughout her journey.
